Cook County property tax bills arriving in mailboxes over the next couple weeks will show a familiar Chicago-area trend: The local tax burden continues to shift from residential to commercial properties. However, that is not the case for all residential property owners.

Pappas’ report also showed the ways the tax hike pain is being felt unequally by different municipalities, as some areas increased their levy by more than others.

Homeowners in west suburban Bellwood, for example, saw the median residential tax bill jump by 45 percent. The median jumped by 32 percent in nearby Maywood.

According to the report, in the south suburbs, higher tax levies have made it so that some property owners pay three to five times as much in annual taxes as the owner of a Chicago property that has the same value.
